Ahmed El Ghazoly is ZULI (aka Swag Lee), an Egyptian multi-instrumentalist, producer and DJ based in Cairo. ZULI’s previous ‘Terminal’(released Lee Gamble’s London-based UIQ label, and featuring previous #SOTD: Kollu I-Joloud) was one of my favourite 2018 albums. This track comes from ZULI’s new ‘Swag Lee is Dead [RIP]’ release; a collection of Trap instrumental-demos for a mixtape Ahmed was intending to release around January 2019 before his “shit was stolen” and the project files were lost.
The new 2020 Melting Pot Music producer series kick starts with Testiculo Y Uno better known as Hulk Hodn (Huss & Hodn) and Twit One (Fleur Earth Experiment) from Cologne, Germany. Both like their beats dusty and soulful.
I think there is a connection between Ssaladd and Slugabed (aka Greg Feldwick), but I’m not too sure what. According to Bandcamp, Ssaladd is bassist Harrison, drummer Toby, and Gregory “Fendering The Rhodes”. Perhaps this is Gregory Feldwick? Anyways, the new ‘Ssaladd EP’ has been released on Feldwick’s on London-based Activia Benz label.
Knxwledge is the New Jersey-bred began experimental hip-hop producer Glen Boothe. Taken from Knxwledge’s upcoming album due to release during spring 2020 on Stones Throw. This track contains a sample form 1991 R&B single ‘Just Because I’m Wrong’ by Gerald Levert. Also recommended is Knxwledge’s December 2019 ‘終了していません’ release, also available on Bandcamp.
Gnome Beats is the Los Angeles flamenco guitar player and producer Timo Ceniceros. Taken from the new album ‘Las Formas En Flujo’ (translation. ‘The Forms in Flux’), which was recorded over the last two and a half years. And the flute on this track is preformed be Wylie Cable, the founder of boutique Dome of Doom record label. Previous Wylie Cable #SOTDs here: Dog Park and: Mobious Strip (feat. CLYDE).
Clark (Christopher Stephen Clark) is an English electronic musician, with a career spanning nearly 20 years and 10 albums with Warp Records. This track comes from Clark’s 2019 ‘Kiri Variations’ album, released on his own Throttle Records label.
Back in May 2018, French DJ Captain XXI released a compilation rare 70’s music; the result of a long work of crate-digging. This track is by Eugen Thomass, a German composer and arranger, primarily of soundtracks and library music. The ‘Hunt Down’ compilation is available on as a limited edition cassette with hand-drawn variant tape.
Los Angeles producer Elusive returns to Dome of Doom with the new album Bonsai Tree. Recordings took place during November and December of last year at Elusive’s home studio in Venice, with features from LA-based musicians Ian Roller (saxophone) and Gabe Steiner (trumpet). The whole album is definitely worth a listen, available on Bandcamp.
Khruangbin (which literally translates to “Engine Fly” in Thai) is an American musical trio from Houston, Texas, featuring Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald Ray “DJ” Johnson Jr. on drums. Their second album ‘Con Todo El Mundo’ was one of my favourite albums of 2018! You can listen to previous #SOTD Maria También (29 Jan 2018); #SOTD Evan Finds The Third Room (4 Oct 2018); and full album on Spotify. And I also featured Khruangbin as the #ChristmasDaySOTD. Now the band are set to release a glorious dub version ‘Hasta El Cielo (Con Todo El Mundo in dub)’. Available to pre-order was Record/Vinyl, CD and Digital Album from Bandcamp. Out on Night Time Stories.
