New single out today. Blog favourite Mdou Moctar is a Tuareg songwriter and musician based in Agadez, Niger. According to Wikipedia, “The Tuareg people are a large Berber ethnic confederation. They principally inhabit the Sahara in a vast area stretching from far southwestern Libya to southern Algeria, Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso. Traditionally nomadic pastoralists, small groups of Tuareg are also found in northern Nigeria.” Previous #SOTDs here: ‘Wiwasharnine’ and here: ‘Anar’. The new single is released on Sahel Sounds.

The name Etran de L’Aïr translates to “the Stars of the Aïr,” the mountainous region of Northern Niger. Every month in 2020, Sahel Sounds are releasing music recorded by Etran de L’Aïr on a mobile phone in Agadez, Niger, then transmitted via WhatsApp to Portland, Oregon. I’m excited!

Mdou Moctar’s previous #SOTD Wiwasharnine was one of my favourite songs of 2019. I just love his unconventional reinterpretation of the Tuareg guitar and Saharan music. Mdou Moctar’s recent releases have been on Sahel SoundsRecords, but this 2012 track comes from a ‘Mdou Moctar Covers EP’ released by BRAINSTORM. This EP featured two reinterpreations of Mdou Moctar’s music by BRAINSTORM, as well as two Mdou Moctar’s covers by Mdou Moctar.
